Description
This fourth title in New Holland’s ‘I am a …’ series introduces the very young to the giants of the deep that live off New Zealand and in oceans all around the world. At a basic and easy-to-grasp level, the book covers the differences between toothed and baleen whales, their methods of hunting and feeding, their breeding and migration habits and the need to conserve their habitat. Photos and amusing illustrations bring the subject to life and the simple rhyming text helps young readers absorb the facts. While the overall content is global, matching the cosmopolitan distribution of most whales, the species shown in the pictures are primarily those found around New Zealand – the humpback, sperm, right whale and others.
New Holland’s popular ‘I am a…’ series for the young (aged 4–6) is a first introduction to wildlife, presented in simple, catchy rhyming verses and illustrated both with cute cartoon characters and documentary photographs. The other titles in the series are I am a Penguin, I am a Dolphin and I am a Seal.
Barbara Todd has written more than 10 books on marine wildlife, covering topics from albatross and penguins to whales and sea lions. Based in Nelson, she spends several months of each year researching orca off the Pacific coast of North America.
Lyttelton illustrator Helen Taylor has a special flair for children’s natural history books, with a long list of credits from her association with Reed and Penguin Books. A Booming in the Night, co-produced with her writer husband Ben Brown, won the NZ Post New Zealand Best Picture Book Award in 2006.
